Five Things on Friday: Ways to feel Re-created

five ways to feel re-created

This summer, I’m doing an 8 week study on abiding by Jessi at Naptime Diaries.  I’m one week in and it is like cool water in a dessert to me.  The prompts and questions feels like sitting with a wise friend who is well acquainted with your weariness and is lovingly helping you get to the root with sweet, healing truth.  The timing is perfect.

One of the prompts at the end of the week is to think back to a season of your life where you felt fully alive and just yourself.  She encourages you to be intentional about trying to re-create some of that {even if it doesn’t look totally the same}.  The end goal is that YOU feel re-created.

So, I thought it would be fun to share some of what those things are for me and maybe they will get your wheels turning about what those things are for you.  Some of them may even be the same.

If you, like many women, spend most of your time doing things that take your energy, my encouragement for you is that you would be intentional about making at least one of those re-creating things a priority for you this month.

1.  Explore a new place

This absolutely brings me to life.  I feel like a child exploring the world.  My senses are wide open, soaking everything in.  In the past for me, this has been: a new country, a new city, hiking to a waterfall, new places at the beach, the cruise we took for our honeymoon, even new places in our own city.

Just being at an easy, relaxed pace with nothing to do but explore and delight our curiosities.

2. Being part of a team that’s doing something significant.

Basically, I think this boils down to being in community with people for a common purpose that’s bigger than ourselves…and knowing where I fit into that.  Being known, knowing them and thriving in my particular giftings.  Knowing that my contribution matters.

In the past, that has been going with teams to other countries for a common purpose, putting on a big, musical production at the schools I taught at {I taught music and chorus}, being part of the performing arts, and just in deep community in general.

3.  Creating something that I love.

It could be designing jewelry, painting thrifted picture frames, making pillows and curtains or even baking.  Making beautiful things with my hands makes me feel like the best parts of myself.

4.  Using my words to speak life.

Few things bring me more joy than having an encouraging word to say to someone or write and seeing the Lord use it to strike a chord in other’s hearts.  I LOVE that!

5. Water

The beach.  Boats.  Boardwalks.  Piers.  Aquariums.  Sea life.

I love it all.  Something about waves and dolphins and coral takes me away to another place.   A beautiful, peaceful, mystical place.  {My college dorm room was completely covered in dolphins and I still dream of swimming with them one day.  I realize this makes me a 12 year old.}

Ideas on how to re-create those things that re-create me:

–paint ocean colors on a canvas {I’ve already got all the supplies…needs to happen soon!}

–go on a little trip with Josh and plan some exploring {hopefully happening in August!}

–visit new-to-me places here:  parks, our whitewater center, a day trip to a nearby town, dinner on the lake, taking a boat ride on the lake, Billy Graham Library, museums uptown.

–host a craft night for ladies in my community group or take a painting class with friends

–find a new {simple} craft to do like embroidery, cross stitch, making garland, paper chains, an easy sewing project.

–planning regular coffee dates with friends

–handwriting cards to women I want to encourage

I hope that got you thinking about some practical ways you might feel alive and refreshed, no matter what season you’re in right now.  Share them in the comments so we can get more ideas from each other!

    Also… I don’t know about you, but I’ve been super bummed about missing five on Friday for the summer. If you’re interested my friend Karli {september FARM} and I {the farmer’s wife} are starting up a link-up “oh hey, friday!” with the exact same outline and would love for you to join us this Friday! Hope to see you there.
